Township of Clearview

OPP Detachment Boards provide civilian input about how policing is provided in their local communities by the O.P.P and are governed under the Community Safety and Policing Act (CSPA). The Huronia West O.P.P. Detachment Board services three (3) municipalities: Township of Clearview, Township of Springwater and the Town of Wasaga Beach. The Board is comprised of eleven (11) members as follows:

Six members of Council (Two from each Municipality)
Three Community Representatives (One from each Municipality)
Two Provincial Appointments

Staff Resources include the Huronia West Detachment Commander and the Clerks from each of the municipalities serviced by the Board.

The Board is a civilian body that oversees the Huronia West detachment of the OPP and draws its authority from the CSPA and regulations. The role of the Huronia West OPP Detachment Board as set out under Section 68(1) of the CSPA is to:
- consult with the Commissioner regarding the selection of a detachment commander and otherwise participate, in accordance with the regulations made by the Minister, in the selection of the detachment commander;
- determine objectives and priorities for the detachment, not inconsistent with the strategic plan prepared by the Minister, after consultation with the detachment commander or his or her designate;
- advise the detachment commander with respect to policing provided by the detachment; monitor the performance of the detachment commander;
- review the reports from the detachment commander regarding policing provided by the detachment; and,
- on or before June 30 in each year, provide an annual report to the Municipal Councils regarding the policing provided by the detachment in their municipalities.
Under the CSPA, the Detachment Board shall prepare estimates of the total amount that will be required to pay the expenses of the board’s operation, other than the remuneration of board members. The Board shall submit the estimates to every municipality that receives policing from the detachment along with a statement of the municipality’s share of the costs, which are to be determined in accordance with the regulations made by the Minister.
